Uh Oh! Did Alex Ariza Slip Marcos Maidana Something?

What is boxing without controversy?! The clips above and below are already providing plenty of it. Allegations are cropping up over the potential use of a banned substance late in the championship fight between Adrien Broner and Marcos Maidana. Maidana went on to win unanimously after soundly thumping Adrien Broner and putting him on the canvas several times. Maidana’s trainer, Alex Ariza, may have jeopardized everything when he uses what is being rumored as smelling salts to sharpen his fighter after he was dazed by a punch at the end of round 11. Ariza has released a statement claiming that it was merely gauze on a napkin, however, in all my years of watching the sport, I’ve never seen a fighter react that way to gauze on a napkin. It certainly looks like he took a big whiff and straightened up on his stool, a second whiff and then he pushed it away, his eyes much wider than they were previously…it’s all speculation at this point, but it certainly looks dubious.

SN: Smelling Salts are banned in Texas.

The more I look at this, the more convinced I am that he used something.
